In the course of the world, the media had become one of the most important factors in the society. Media have a very influential role with the society. Furthermore, issues that are present in the society are discussed by the media. Hence through the media, various types of concerns in the society are addressed. On the other hand, there are values which are also learned from the media. Some of these learning are not helpful for the daily lives of individuals most especially the youth. One of these is violence which is the primary concept of different television shows available.
Violence is known to be the physical action of hurting oneself or another person. Through the physical violence, of different individuals are hurt or even killed. Thus in a much bigger context, violence is also making a group of individual suffer from physical pain which could also possibly lead to death or a grave physical harm. In my own point of view, violence, is not only presented in the physical hurt which is received by individuals but also through the violating the minds of people to psychological torture, inequality, and the likes. In connection to the media, there are different shows that present violence as its main concept. Moreover, I choose Chuck and CSI New York as the primetime televisions which present violence.
Both these primetime shows presents violence. The violence that is present in the shows promotes a fight against good and evil which needs various types of actions. These primetime shows mostly present that the good people must be able to fight the bad people physically in order to attain peace. Moreover, the scenes that are mostly presented utilize many fight scenes including guns and different types of weapons.
In the show Chuck, there had been different fight scenes which require guns in order to fully capture the bad people. Major Casey and Agent Sarah Walker were the handlers of the human intersectCharles Chuck Bartowski. Charles Bartowski is the lead character who does not want to use any weapon therefore Major Casey and Agent Walker often bring guns to protect Chuck. Given that the enemies often have guns, the team (Major Casey, Agent Sarah Walker and Charles Bartowski) have to counter attack the enemies with guns. Also, provided that the major characters are mostly government enforcers under the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and NSA (National Security Agency), they are trained and required to have weapons. Also, noting that Major Casey is violent and heartless most of the time, he often responds to different kinds of situations through utilizing power and dangerous weapons.
Moreover, the use of violence in Chuck is very minimal compared to other television shows which present gruesome deaths and killings. Through the personality of Chuck, there is negligible amount of gun shots or deaths. The director does not present to the viewers different types of maltreatment of torture. However, in the past season there was higher amount of torture and deaths.
In the case of CSI Miami, it is already a given that violence would be present. Provided that the show presents the actual hunt and search for the bad people, there are much gruesome visuals. There are different kinds of violence in terms of how the victim was killed as well as the process of the killing. Although gruesome as it might seem, the show as well as the plot of the stories needed this type of scenes in order to present the case. Moreover through the violence and gruesome imagery, the viewers are able to see the reality of the job of a CSI. Accordingly, the scenes are that are shown are somehow reasonable in its own light. However, the concept of violence is very much present in CSI Miami.
Observation
Upon my observation, CSI Miami is the most violent among the two prime time shows. In the very first scene, there was an immediate use of gun due to the carjacker. Immediately, there was violence due to the fear caused by the carjackers action. In addition to this, the gun shot launched another fear for the viewers. After such scene, there was a sudden fall of a person from the tree. Thus, starting the case of why a person suddenly fallen from the tree. Although this is the case, there was a fast realization that the person did not fall from the tree. Furthermore, the aspects of the crime are CSI is truly more gruesome compared to Chuck. Chuck only presents minimal action and killings in the current episode.
Analysis of Violence based on Operational Definition
In both of the shows I have watched, different types of violence is present. One is the usage of guns within the shows. Due to the nature of fighting enemies, there is a presence of guns. On the other hand, there is also a presence of death in CSI Miami. Although the situation in CSI Miami is not a typical crime, the murder of a person in the show is still posted as violence due to the physical harm caused to the body of the victim. Moreover, the violence included in the operation definition does not fully encompass the violence which is present in these television shows. However, there are some parts in which shows physical harm to the people involved. In the first parts of CSI and the later parts of Chuck shows that physical violence in forms of physical abuse and release of harmful chemicals were present. In general, violence in these televisions shows are present and could not be taken away. Violence could only be minimal in these types of television shows. If the physical harm is removed, the concepts of these shows will not be as interesting and top rated as it is now.
Conclusion
In conclusion, violence could not be separated from the current television shows. Violence is already a big part of television shows and media. Moreover, these types of primetime shows had become a norm in the media and are highly supported by huge networks. Although there could be a reason for such violence to be present in television (due to the demand of the people and the likes), the control with the types of violence to be presented must be controlled. Given that media is able to influence people of all ages and also in different countries, this sector or society must realize that viewers and the values present in these shows creates a huge persuasion to the viewers. Thus, the media should also be responsible with the shows they create and promote.
