The Controversy of Abortion

Abortion has always been a significant issue for voters in America since its legalization by some States in 1973 (Anonymous, 2009). They were of the view that it would save the mothers life incase of incest, rape or if the fetus was deformed.  The Pro-life community defines abortion as an intentional act of interrupting the process of development between the time of conception and birth while, the pro-choice community terms it as ending of a pregnancy before the fetus becomes viable.

Due to the disparity of human kind there has always been different ways of viewing issues in life. The conservatives have different views from the liberals.  On this specific issue of abortion, there has been a lot of controversy about it.  For instance the conservatives believe that life starts at conception hence abortion is murdering human being which no one has a right to, while the liberals believe that a fetus is not a human being hence abortion is not murder.  The Conservatives support the legislature to make laws that prohibit any form of abortion like partial birth abortion while the liberals view abortion as a personal decision and choice of any woman about her body and therefore the government should not get involved.  They support the fact that women should have a guarantee to safe and legal abortion which should include partial birth abortion.  Liberals are also of the view that pornographic materials are relatively harmless, despite the fact that they are offensives. They claim that being offensive is not a reason enough for the restriction while the conservatives oppose use of sexually explicit materials since they cause harm to people by damaging their character and well-being (Stark, 1997).

It is not surprising how survey shows that men and women have almost same opinions about abortion.  This is due to the fact that women have been given a chance to air their own views due to the feminism era that is aimed at ending the era of male dominance in making all the crucial decisions in a womans life.  Women have risen up for liberation and they want to determine their personality for the benefit of humankind.  However, women are known to be more caring, self-sacrificing, emotional and always acting to uphold relationships hence expected to give opinions that contradict their male counterparts, who concentrate on the end result, take face value and are rigid to opinions.

The abortion controversy in our nation is often so bitter due to the fact that when it comes to happiness people think the same since they need to achieve their ambitions.  The conservatives and the liberals fight each other so that they can reach their satisfaction and without that then they can never feel contented and happy.  They terrify and agitate each other which has left everyone wondering what this country stands for.  Due to my optimism, I once believed that one day as a nation we would come to a consensus about this issue but my experiences have made me pessimistic since my certainty about my country finding a middle ground about abortion faded away.  However, if people learn to lower their pride and view this issue with the eye of humanity then we shall be able to get the best solution. As a nation, we could be better off finding a common ground in regard to abortion without compromising on human life sanctity and on the other hand holding each mans dignity.
