gender, conflit and the second palestinian intifada

The authors of the article proclaim that the Oslo period is responsible for the shaping and development of the forms, sites, and levels of resistance. They argue that Palestinian Authority have solved the contradictions and crises of Palestinian nationalism during this period through disallowing democratic politics and participation. However, the Palestinian womens movement proves that the earlier absence of women from confrontations led to the realization of lack of participations from women, and thus came to light the crises related to masculinity, paternity and maternity. Other main points of the article revolve around nationalism, national liberation, military occupation, masculinity, maternity, and militarism.

What is most interesting is the logic presented, and it does indeed make sense. The logic presented is that countering the narrowing of womens roles is possible by widening the framework for participation through an alternative politics. I agree with the view that participation of women in politics by forming their own political parties, and encouraging their children to resist are valid and important forms of participation. However, I do believe that childrens safety and innocence should be protected for as long as possible in such times. Children should not be made to suffer more than is absolutely avoidable. That is one question or critique that this article raises in my mind where is the decency in pushing mere children to the forefront of a serious political and nationalistic crisis Despite the fact that I agree that the issue in Palestine is very grave and involves all, I still maintain that children should be left out of this brutal reality of life and their immediate environment to whatever extent possible.
