Effects of the use of non-Latin domains in the internet

All changes that take place in the world of technology have both advantages and disadvantages. Looking at the advantages, the use of non-Latin addresses and domains in the internet would make it accessible to millions of non-Latin based character users. It would be of great benefit to those who have not been taught the Latin alphabet especially children and the aged (SangHun, para, 11).

Companies will use local languages in their webs to safeguard their brand names. The use of local domain names will enhance local communication and thereby increase the development of local markets. It will also increase communication within specific regions. Based on the fact that millions of internet users as illustrated by SangHun (para, 13) communicate with non-Latin alphabets based dialect, a multilingual internet will be developed. Introduction of non-Latin domains in countries such as Russia is a very great advancement towards development of the communication sector, a trend that will be embraced by other countries. The use of non-Latin scripts would open the internet to a wide class of people who are not familiar with Latin alphabets (SangHun para, 14).

The use of non-Latin based domains has got disadvantages as well. One of them is that it may pose a great complexity in the fight against cyberspace insecurity. The major disadvantage to the use of non-Latin domains is that, all keyboards in the world contain Latin symbols only.

Use of local domains will only help the people who exist within a certain localities and not the international community. Global communication sector may face a major blow because hermetic webs may be developed. Use of local scripts in the internet will lead to development of censorship. Security companies will restrict accessibility to the internet. Communication companies are still adamant on their stance not to embrace the use of non-Latin domains (Levy, para 3).
