Crime rates among African-American young men

One of the most plausible explanations for the high rate of African-American young mens collision with law is usually revolves around the social inequities. When the blacks abandoned the farms in the early twentieth century and settled in major towns, they ended up settling in less endowed suburbs in most cities. Successive governments did not pay attention to the role that these suburbs were playing at the time to perpetuate inequalities, and consequently never came up with policies that would ease them. Instead, the governments continued with business as usual and sometimes even designed policies that aggravated the inequalities, a good example being the policy on education funding.

As a consequence, there is more likelihood of finding a black person in the poor neighborhood than it is for the white person. Crime rates are highest among the poor and so is its growth. As crime rates increase, the most increase will be in the poor neighborhoods, which makes the black people prime candidates for crimes. In addition, a change in government policy to get tougher on crime increases the chances of the black colliding with the criminal justice system. I agree with these factors, and I believe that crime rates among the urban poor will not see a decrease until the glaring inequalities are addressed. Crime thrives in poverty and inequality and the US is not immune to this and the faster it takes measures to correct some of the inequalities the better it will be for them.

These factors cannot however be applied to women. As much as they are both minority groups, their exposure to crime nurturing conditions remain different. Unlike blacks, women cannot be said to be segregated to underprivileged areas of the cities. They have a fair distribution of their population cutting across the society stratum. Women incidences of crime cannot therefore be explained using the minority historical injustices argument.
