Introduction to social research participant observation-Ethnographic beginnings
Site
I was woken up by the melodious voice of a lady from a loudspeaker from the nearby church. That is when it downed in me that it was on Saturday and those who worship in this particular day are supposed to start Sabbath school. I dressed and headed there because I knew I will be given all the attention that a visitor deserved and my research would be a success because most of the believers will think I am curious. I also made that decision because I thought that in church people are humble and for any issue worth clarification then the clergy will be more than willing to offer assistance.
The welcoming to the church was exhilarating and the ushers helped me to sit where I would be able to take video clips in the most comfortable way. I was asked to sign the visitors book and was given a copy of the Seventh Day Hymnal to make singing an ease exercise. There was a sense of belonging and an aura atmosphere of greetings and jubilations in praise of the lord. The code of dressing was official with all women in long skirts or dresses and no high heels. The chorister seemed to enjoy every moment that he was asked to lead the church in a song and the man laying the piano seemed at Jesus feet. I chose the setting because there was humility in the way people handled each other and the dignified way in which all visitors were being handled. I was sure that there wouldnt be any form of violence in the church setting as compared to other settings where a foreigner is likely to face a lot of humiliation.
Then it got to the time that visitors were supposed to be welcomed. The person in charge read all our names as we stood and we were asked to introduce ourselves alongside greeting the congregation. When it was my turn I did the necessary and was welcomed with hugs and handshakes for those who were around. At the end of the service we were invited for lunch and was allowed to chat with the clergy. It was exhilarating for them to explain to me their routine actions and even what the church beliefs are.
From the building to the way people addressed each other it was simplifying that there was love of god binding the people together. The compound itself as shown below was humble enough to usher in anyone with any intentions and at last the person would leave with one thing, love for self, others and for God.
The shown photo above is the one which welcomes one to Liliw SDA church. In the morning hors, there would be a number of ushers just before the door to welcome believers and make them sit according to their purpose for running of the entire church activities well.
The following photo shows where visitors and the congregation are supposed to sit. The arrangement is indented to allow for everyone follow the proceedings with full attention and for those who would want to take photographs or video clips they would do it with much ease.
The following photograph shows the seats meant for the church choir. It is flat to necessitate movement and also to ensure that the voices come out with one projection. The choir is supposed to operate from the front right corner so that anybody videotaping them can do it with ease.
The alter is raised for everyone to have full view of whatever that is going on and with all the necessary multimedia implements to offer any sermons that are in video or audio form. It is ravished withy flowers to show the purity in heart of the people who are expected to be in church.
All activities in the church are live with the phrases praise God and Halleluiah dominating the air and some ululations and jubilations. Kids were all over with a lot of joy running up and down, others crawling and others crying. The mood of the church was a celebratory one and each and every person was willing to carry the neighbors burden.
After the morning service, the people dispersed into smaller groups sharing of how the whole week was and for the visitors we were taken together for lunch. They appreciated my visiting the church and choosing the church for the kind of activity that I was engaged in and gave me a present of a prophetic book written by Ellen G White patriarchs and prophets to go and read. They were willing to clarify why they think the church is the remnant one and how they follow the doctrines of the Bible including the eating habits that they exhibit. After having good time with them they bid me bye and escorted me with a message to return again to the church not for purpose of gathering information but in praise of the lord together.
Analysis
The above mode of research is reflective in approach because the account of all activities is personal experiences, reactions and attitudes within the account and even the discussion is based on accommodating only the good part of the story and reconciliating it. However taking of photographs had no problem and a lot of information was solicited not knowing that the solicited information may be only on the good aspects but the other side of the coin is not exposed. The touchstone of scientific endeavor is reputedly the replicability of the investigation. When one is working with naturalistic setting with social groups engaged in everyday actions, one cannot guarantee that a research exercise and its results can be repeated (Hammersley, Paul, 1994). It is true that reality is not stable as per the words of the Greek philosopher Heraclutus that the essence of the universe is change and you cannot step into the same river twice, for the second time it may not apply to the same river. This means that the object of investigation never is because it is always changing into something else.
