Family

Family is the fundamental social group consisting of parents and their children. Family is the basic unit in sociology. The foundation of any society rests on the shoulder of this sociological institution. Family consists of a married couple with children. Along-with some complex forms of families also exist as joint and extended families. People living as family share ambitions and values, and are often into long term commitments to one another. This basic institution has certain functions to fulfill. Family legally fulfils the biological and sexual needs of the spouses. It caters the psychological needs of the children. Child rearing is the basic purpose. Children are socialized in the family. It is the economic resource of the children for the certain period of time, depending upon the context and place of belonging. With the passage of time the concepts and roles regarding the family is transforming. Extended and joint families have almost diminished from the scene. Role assigned in nuclear families are changing as father now is not the sole provider of bread to the family.  Charles Darwin, Fredrick Engle, Lewis Henry Morgan talked extensively about the evolution of the family in one way or the other.

Culture Shock
Culture shock refers to the feelings of apprehension, surprise and confusion when populace has to function within a different and strange culture as one may come across abroad. This concept also stems out of the trouble in assimilating the new culture, creating difficulty in deciding between appropriate and inappropriate. This idea also covers the dislikes or confusion regarding the new cultural construction, ethics and morals. This notion has different implications of kind and intensity. This phenomenon occurs in different phases starting from honeymoon phase, negotiation and adjustment phase. Sometimes the shock is temporary as in case of foreign country. In traditional societies, this has severe connotations as people don not welcome any change easily. This phenomenon is due to the diversity of human culture present at the social scene of the world. Ethnocentrism is another cause of this issue.

Society
Different social scientists have defined the term society as aggregate of individuals living together for a common cause. The notion of society has different forms and manifestations like it may a ethnic group, nation state or cultural group. The society can be summed up as cultural, economic, political, social and religious infrastructure. This concept has evolved since ages from hunter and gatherer societies, tribal or peasant societies to civilization.  Anthropologist Maurice Godelier differentiates human society from animal society on the basis of parental roles acquired by the individual members. This term covers both the political and scientific construction of the idea of the society. The society shapes up the life patterns of both individual and a community. The phenomenon of social disruption leads to social change. The dynamics of society at different levels are illustrated and analyzed by thinkers, writers in the form of different ideologies, social commentaries and literature.

All the above mentioned concepts are interrelated and interlinked in one way or the other. Family is the basic unit of any social organization. From family originates the idea of society and collective will. In society, different cultures come into contact with each other. Thus this contact of differences leads to culture shock. This difference is the beauty of sociological settings. All these concepts have been elucidated by different theorists and social scientists over the period of time as the discipline of sociology evolved gradually.
