Social Workers Dealing with Delinquency and Crime

Delinquency refers to acts of crime that are committed by juveniles. The issue of delinquency and commission of crime in general have been of great bother to the society for many years. This discussion looks at the causes of delinquency and crime and the reasons why social workers favor rehabilitation treatment in work with offenders. There is no one particular cause of delinquency and crime. Instead the causes are different, many and multifaceted. However, criminologists argue that the causes of crime are more embedded in an individual more than the environment surrounding them (Tshiwulla, L. 2008).

Studying the causes of delinquency has been cited as an important factor as it forms the basis of commission of crimes in a persons adult life. As already mentioned causes of crime is more multiple than single meaning that there are many causes of crime as opposed to one particular cause. Labeling has also been cited as a major cause of crime among the young people. When a young person is labeled as a criminal even though he is a good person he or she will tend to conform to what the society perceives about him (Norman, J. Leonard, S.  Marvin, E. W. 2009).

It is unfortunate that parents and guardians always seem to be in denial in regard to the fact that their child is embedded to crime. Parents will always tend to be protective and will always deny this fact until their child is arrested. This brings about a crisis and thus there is great need for a swift action to be taken to prevent delinquency. When it comes to crimes committed by children, the family plays a great role in determining what kind of an adult the child will become. It is at this stage that the social workers come in. Their work is to advise parents on how to accept at the earliest possible opportunity the condition of their child and take reasonable steps to correct it before the situation gets out of hand.

One may wonder how crime and delinquency is related to social workers. However the truth of the matter is that social workers cannot afford to ignore this problem as they encounter it way too many times in the course of their work. Social workers play a vital role as they are non partisans as far as the issue of crime is concerned. Social workers have always played a contributory role in the rehabilitation of all those involved in crime (Norman, J. Leonard, S.  Marvin, E. W. 2009).

Social workers have been seen as a vital part of the society as they play a key role in reducing the population in prisons. Social workers prefer rehabilitation of offenders as opposed to taking them to jail. While rehabilitating them, social workers are able to help the offenders grow out of their habits so as to become good members of the society. It is important to note that social workers need cooperation from family members if they are going to succeed in combating crime and delinquency. The society must endeavor to work with social workers for a better tomorrow (Tshiwulla, L. 2008).

In conclusion, the role played by social workers especially in the rehabilitation of offenders both adult and juveniles cannot be overlooked. They help the society a great deal by correcting offenders and shaping their lifestyle back to track. Much gratitude should be given to them for their relentless efforts.
