TO LIVE OR DIE FOR

Contemporary culture is largely defined by the belief system that the society regards as paramount. Those values they consider sacred are the guiding principles that govern their lives. The Bill of Rights, which includes, the right to freedom, the right of association, freedom of the press, and the right to life among others, embodies values the citizenry consider non-negotiable. Such values influence government decisions and have been instrumental in drafting domestic and foreign policy.
Under threat by external forces, the American people have been quick to rally their support behind the military in a bid to repel the enemy. The war on terror won widespread support from the masses because of the belief that the American way of life was under threat from terrorist forces. Despite the increasing number of casualties being shipped home from the warfront, public support for the war effort never waned.  Most people considered military action the best option and, lost troops as a necessary sacrifice.

Honesty is a value the American people admire very much and, demand from their leaders (Babcock 95). Nixon was almost impeached because of actions by government officials believed to be working at his behest. Clinton nearly suffered the same fate over denials concerning his indiscretion with Lewinsky.  The Iran- Contra scandal put Reagan on the spot with accusations that he knew about the deal from its inception. Public trust in his presidency plummeted after this scandal despite Reagan being cleared of any complicity.

Religious freedoms and strong family values are things that some cultures would live and die for (Babcock 78). The Catholic community is a staunch advocate of pro life positions and condemns those calling for the right to abort and widespread use of condoms. Catholics have a very high regard for marriage and consider divorce as religious sacrilege. Before one can begin divorce proceedings, the clergy must approve of it while, the final dissolution must receive papal assent.

In conclusion, those values that a society respects highly and are unwilling to compromise on are those that its members cherish and if necessary, are willing to die for. Any threat towards such cultural values will be confronted by the society which remains committed to preserving their heritage.
