Public Spaces Annotated Bibliography

In the peer-reviewed article of Mitchell (1995), emphasis is placed on the Peoples Park, a public space that has become witness to the political discourses that is related to democracy. In this source, the author argues that there is an end to the idea of public spaces as avenues for oppositional political movements. More so, the author shows that the presence of homeless people who settled in the public spaces is against the concept of the public space.

The article can be used for the purpose of identifying the changing nature of the public spaces function in the present-day society. More so, it can be used as a historical foundation for the evolution of the public space and in defining who has access to it.

Laws, G. (1993). The land of old age Societys changing attitudes toward urban built environments for elderly people. Annals of the Association of American Geographers, 83(4), pp. 672-693.

In this article, Laws (1993) maintains her argument that the urban environment is built within the limits of the ageist attitudes. The ageist attitudes tend to segregate the elderly from the society with the notion that they have distinct consumption needs that is incompatible with the environment of young people. The article can be used for the purpose of determining the architectural and design attitude towards the elderly, especially in the urban setting. Aside from this, it shows the difficulties experienced by the elderly as they deal with the urban environment and as they clamor for their needs.

In the article published at Pakistan Press International, the need for facilities for disabled persons in public spaces is placed in focus. The article shows that while disabled persons are not prevented from going to public spaces, the lack of facilities do not allow them to carry out activities they usually do. In this article, it is also emphasized that disabled persons should be given consideration because of their huge potential in contributing towards the countrys success, especially so with the belief that they have God-given gifts.

Serena, J. (2008). Ramps yet to become common in public spaces. The Hindu.
In this article, the author shows the lack of ramps in public spaces, which affects the ability of people to go and move in public spaces. However, it is also noted that there are already moves corresponding to policies of constructing ramps in public areas. The article shows that there are adjustments that need to be made for the disabled to easily move in public spaces. They have unique needs and requirements in order for them to do certain tasks. When the public spaces are not equipped with the right facilities, the disabled are discriminated from doing the tasks and activities they need to do.

In this article, new rules and regulations that have the purpose of enhancing the access of disabled persons in public spaces. There are recommendations enumerated as to how the disables persons can be given prior consideration. The article is a testament to the current policies that are promulgated for the elderly. It can also be used in discussing the steps being taken by the government, with the cooperation of the private sector, in making the public spaces accessible to a larger number of people.
