The effect of choices of work on families

Work force in most cases is provided by different age groups within different times of the year depending on the type of industries in which they work.  The working patterns of a nation may affect decision making both at work place as well as the social set up not forgetting the nature of family structures must also be affected.  According to the U.S demographic data from 1984 tom 2004, the work force in dominated by the majority of the middle aged persons.  The trend seems to be projected to the future thus there will be more of the middle aged persons occupying the work force by the next census in 2014.

The effect of work force on other social institution is that all social institutions shift there goals and communication towards the economic development projections.  All heads are geared towards the economic side families become complex units with very limited time for members of the families and limited time for social activities.  The reason is that work place environment is very different from the home environment.  Some times, the workplace generates more fun and more interactive activities than in the home and many people have the tendencies to spend more time in the workplace without the slightest thought of the lurking danger of a broken family in future (The Sociology of Work, 2010). The workplace is also very separate from homes time for leisure in the workplace is also separate form work time, while all other social group activities take a U-turn towards economic focus.  The churches, the government, families and educational system structures are all geared towards economic production.  The social ties of relationships die out and few links are left to run families.

Working is not only a way of earning a living but also a source if prestige for the working class.  According studies, Americans feel better while working rather than when they dont work even if they were to get a pay for not working they would insist on working.  The working class has an additional identity for them apart form home (Nick, 2007). They are more reasonable and intellectual as well as liberal in dealing with diverse and challenging situations of life.

Work has gone through transition since the 1820 when over 70 of Americans worked on agricultural farms. By 1910, only 31 worked in the same sector and at present, the majority of them work in offices as managers and professional and technological duties.

Families may under go a series of transitions before they stabilize.  The effect of two working parents on the children seems to contradict the expectations. The children find it comfortable even when they are less than six years so long as the mother does not work for long hours.  At the age of three, most children are already taken to preschool classes and they grow up comfortably with a different role model.  The problem is that they lose touch of their tradition and are less concerned with their parents and that only 40 of the parents can afford the expensive child care.  Children whose one of their parent is working are more stable in development as compared to two working parent (Nick, 2007).

The two working spouse find themselves conflicting more often due to the increased parental responsibility with reduced attention to each other as they used to when they had no children. However, if they do not divorce or separate the trend normalizes as the children grow up and leave the home. Most divorces occur during childbearing due to conflict levels.
