CHILDREN AND TECHNOLGY

Technology is evolving every day, new gadget, new ingenious innovations come are way every second. At the point of such a technological revolution it is impossible that our children will not get enamored with technology. Gone are the days when toys, bicycles were a childs desire now he wishes to own a playstation, an I-phone or the fanciest digital toy available in the market. Children cannot imagine their life without the technical gadgets rather we rarely find any child who is technically not adept.

The effects of technology have its negative as well as positive effects on people. A recent study has proved those children who have computer knowledge at a very young age develop better intelligence, structural and logical thinking and non verbal skills. Integration of technology in a constructive manner into the lives of the children helps in achieving better mathematical and motor skills. Schools include computerized learning where third graders get to use the Internet and also gain knowledge on how to use instant messaging. First graders can be creative and draws various pictures on their paint applications. Thus using computerized learning can never prove to be a bane for children if is used in a constructive manner. The Internet has a wide pool of information children can use the knowledge available on the Net and can develop projects which are innovative and filled with creativity. Technology thus helped in tapping the creative energy of each and every child which helps in better inventions and further innovative innovations.

Children consider technology as a part of their life however technology also has proven to be bane for many. Technology promotes higher thinking but it also proves a hindrance in the development of the childs overall personality. Many social thinkers argue that technology has stunted a childs interpersonal skills. Since a child is always absorbed in his digital toys, he will never take the effort to mix up with new people and consequently make lesser friends.  Scientists believe that children who are highly involved in technology are not independent, unable to make decisions and are not sensitive to others.  Other argument put of by social thinkers is that with the advent of digital gadgets children prefer to stay inside and play with their gadgets. This results in the child to develop less motor skills and therefore there are fewer children who are now genuinely interested in outdoor sports. Even though the Internet is filled with huge information and contains data on various subjects it also contains a huge amount of pornographic data which is certainly not suitable for children. This unsuitable data is available to the children for free and is without nay censorship. Technology should be imbibed into the curriculum in a constructive manner, but they can never be a supplement for the actual books. A recent study also argued that technology is included into the curriculum, but with technology comes the integrated entertainment packages which include music, movies, sports etc. The disadvantages of technology are that it gives rise to many health problems even for children. Child obesity is increasing at an alarming rate in the country, the prime reason for it is that children heavily involve themselves in digital toys and rarely exercise or involve in some outdoor sports. The worst fear of technology is that it can lead to a possible addiction of gadgets. Nowadays children rarely can live without any of their gadgets and this primarily proves their addiction.

Technology has its pros and cons, but we as a consumer have to decide how to moderate the use of technology. Parents and teachers must include technology into the lives of the children but they should strategically use it so that the children can reap in the benefits of technology rather than imbibe the disadvantages of technology.
